AI Privacy Risks in Project Management: A Grounded Theory of Lifecycle-Contingent Practitioner Perspectives

By Hajar Niroomand - Dakota State University

The study uses Grounded Theory methodology to empirically investigate how project managers perceive, encounter, and respond to privacy risks when integrating AI-enabled tools across predictive, adaptive, and hybrid project lifecycle approaches, through semi-structured interviews with project managers.

Eligible participants include project managers, program managers, and other professionals who manage or oversee projects and have experience using AI-enabled tools in their project work.

While the broader study includes project managers and leaders with experience using AI-enabled tools in projects, currently the study is seeking participants with predictive (Waterfall) project experience.

Participants will take part in a single audio/video-recorded interview lasting approximately 40–45 minutes. During the interview, participants will respond to open-ended questions about their experiences using AI tools in project management, including their perspectives on privacy risks and benefits.

All research data will be de-identified prior to analysis.  Findings will be reported at the aggregate theoretical level without identifying individual participants or their organizations.

Participants may benefit indirectly from the opportunity to reflect on their experiences with AI and privacy in project management. Participants will be offered a summary of the study findings upon completion, which may provide insights relevant to their professional practice.
